Season 1979/80. The last season covered by this website. Transimage tried their first and only collection - a pity since it showed promise. Sigma tried their first collection, with the promise of many more to come - but unfortunately they never came. FKS tried the quality end of the market by producing bronze medallions which could be purchased. The market seems to be in a state of change, leading to the dismal days of the 1980s - but that's another story!

Sigma
Action Portraits of Famous Footballers. Described as a set of 'sixty postacards' these portrait cards were drawn by Barrie Cutler with text by Keith Parsons. The set was produced in association with 'The Supporters Football Form Book and Diary, 1979-80 edition'. The set was printed in Great Britain by Prescott-Pickup & Co. Ltd., Bridgnorth.

Sigma Sport Silhouettes Limited had an address of 'Stanmore Industrial Estate, Bridgnorth, Salop, England', but not much more is known about them. The introduction to the album for these cards states 'Nearly four years ago our associated Company published the first in a uniform series of books for collectors and enthusiasts in which could be mounted sets of sixty different postcard size colour prints. So far these collections have treated transport and historical subjects exclusively, but from the inception of the series we have been asked repeatedely to include sport, including football'.

The publishers also state 'This first collection is intended to be representative only - a difficult enough task in itself - but successive annual sets of sixty portraits will fill out the gaps...'.

The Foreword ends 'It is possible that this First Edition will become a collectors item since it is restricted in number and it is being offered for sale only to readers of certain provincial newspapers'. How true.... Unfortunately there is no record of subsequent productions.

Topps Chewing Gum

Set size: 396

Transimage
Football 79/80. An enormous set of small stickers, 528 in total, most of which were issued in pairs. The collection includes 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division team players, International Action and International Stars, Scottish Premier Division team players, and composite pictures of the England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

The stickers came in packets, with 8 stickers for 6p. The stickers were pre-glued i.e. they had peelable backs.

The album for these stickers was printed in Italy, and cost 15p from 'your local shop'.

Transimage operated a Collectors Service whereby you could order missing stickers. This service operated from 1 October 1979 to 1 April 1980.

In many ways its a pity that this collection didn't catch on, since it showed great promise.

Set size: 528 stickers
