Death notices - Rest in Peace

These pages aim to respect the memory of football league players who played, managed or otherwise featured in England in the period from 1965/66 to 1979/80. It will list the players whose deaths are known. If you can provide confirmed details to update this page please email me. Figures in brackets after teams represent the number of league appearances made, where known, mainly sourced from Rothmans Football League Players Records.

The 1970/71 FKS album notes: "Scottish born goalkeeper once on Luton Town's books but since joining Carlisle United in June 1963 has developed into the fringe of international honours. Has played in well over 200 matches for the club. Height 5ft 10¾in. Wt. 10.7½."

Johnny (Budgie) Byrne 27/10/1999 Aged 60	Crystal Palace (256), West Ham United (156), Fulham (18). Included in Alf Ramsey’s original 26 man squad for the 1966 World Cup finals but was omitted from the final 22 chosen to contest the final. Moved to South Africa in 1969 and remained there for the rest of his life. The 1966/67 A&BC card notes: "West Ham centre forward. A highly gifted player who can fill any of the forward positions. Johnny has been capped eleven times for England, but was passed over for the 1966 World Cup. Recalled for the English League v. the Irish League in September 1966 he gave an impressive performance, cracking home four of England's goals in their record 12-0 win. He gained a Cup-winner's medal with West Ham in 1964, and a European Cup-winner's medal in 1965. Height 5' 8½". Weight 11st. 7lb.".
Andy McGowan 05/05/1999 Aged 42	Northampton Town (105). Part of the Northampton team which won promotion from Division Four in 1975/76. Died after failing to recover from anaesthetic whilst undergoing a knee operation	Not known to have appeared in football cards of the period of this website.
Gordon Hodgson ??/04/1999 Aged 46	Newcastle United (9), Mansfield Town (184), Oxford United (67), Peterborough United (44). The 1978/79 Sun Soccercard states: "Gordon's League appearances were limited with his first club Newcastle United. After only a handful of games he moved to Mansfield Town in June, 1974 for a substantial fee. Since signing he can hardly complain of not playing! Gordon is so consistent in his stylish play from midfield that he has not missed a League game in the past three seasons".
Dennis Viollet 06/03/1999 Aged 65	Manchester United (258), Stoke City (182). Played in 1955/56 and 1956/57 United teams which won the First Division title. Died at home in the U.S. from a brain tumour following a long illness. The 1966/67 A&BC card notes: "Stoke City centre forward. A free scoring centre forward with two English caps. Denis switched to right half at the start of the 1966-67 season. Began his career with Manchester United before being transferred to Stoke where he played a vital part in their successful promotion campaign of 1962-63. Height 5' 8". Weight 11st.".
Arthur Mann 03/02/1999 Aged 51	Hearts, Manchester City (35), Blackpool (3), Notts County (253), Shrewsbury Town (8), Mansfield Town (79). Killed when a forklift truck overturned onto him. The FKS 1970/71 album notes: "Was a 65,000 full-back capture from Hearts' in November 1968 but after his debut v West Ham made only a few appearances before being recalled in February 1970, when he enjoyed another run in the Maine Road side. HT. 5ft. 9in. Wt. 10.10.".
Brian Turner 01/12/1999 Aged 62	Bury (454), Oldham Athletic (11). Team captain throughout much of the 1960's. Ever present in Bury's 1960/61 Division Three Championship team and also in the 1967/8 promotion side.	Not known to have appeared in football cards of the period of this website.

The FKS 1968/69 album notes: "A Crystal Palace discovery he was transferred to Portsmouth where he made his name as a valuable utility player appearing in seven different positions. Coventry paid £20,000 for him in January 1967. Professional since April 1960.".
John Osborne 07/11/1998 Aged 57	Chesterfield (110), West Bromwich Albion (250), Wallsall (3). The FKS 1968/69 album notes: "Clean handling, courageous goalkeeper secured from Chesterfield in January 1967. Was an England schoolboy international at the same time as Talbot. Was on Chesterfield's books as an amateur before turning professional in September 1960.".
Dick Sheppard 18/10/1998 Aged 53	West Bromwich Albion (39), Bristol Rovers (151), Torquay United (2). The FK 1968/69 album notes: "Bristol-born player who made his name as a local schoolboy representative. Favours the spectacular style of goalkeepering. A Hawthorns apprentice in August 1960 and a full-timer in February 1963. First League appearance in October 1965.".

The FKS Mexico 70 album notes: "Has appeared for England in both full-back positions during his 19 appearances in full colours for his country. Also had four outings in the Under-23 range. Blackburn Rovers to Everton for £90,000 in December 1969.".
Justin Fashanu 02/05/1998 Aged 37	Norwich City (90), Nottingham Forest (32), Southampton (9), Notts County (64), Brighton and Hove Albion (16), Manchester City (2), West Ham United (2), Leyton Orient (5), Torquay United (41). Committed suicide. The FKS Soccer Stars 80 sticker notes: "Centre-forward who signed professional forms at 17 in December 1978 and finished the season as the first choice in attack. Was a junior ABA boxing champion.".

Robbie James 18/02/1998 Aged 40	Swansea City (483), Stoke City (48), Q.P.R. (87), Leicester City (23), Bradford City (89), Cardiff City (51). Collapsed while playing football. The FK Soccer 82 album notes: "Striker. Dangerous, goalscoring centre-forward who has made over 300 appearances for Swansea. Another of City's Welsh internationals. Born Swansea. Ht. 5' 10". Wt. 12. 1½.".

David Bairstow 05/01/1998 Aged 46	Bradford City (17). Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper. Hanged himself at his home, although the coroner recorded an open verdict saying that he was not convinced Bairstow had meant to kill himself. The 1978/79 Sun Soccercard notes: "Striker costing Orient £65,000 when signed from Tottenham in October, 1978. Ian made a great start with his new club by scoring both Orient goals in a 2-0 win at Charlton on 6th October, 1978. Won England Under-23 caps with his first club Stoke City and was transferred to Tottenham at the start of the 1976-77 season.".

The 1976/77 FKS album notes: "Vastly experienced midfield player and captain who has won schools, Under-23 and 54 full caps for Scotland as well as completing more than 550 League appearances. Signed by the Club from Gowanhill Juniors as a lad. Ht. 5ft. 5½in. Wt. 9.13.".
Ray Bridgett 02/10/1997 Aged 50 Cancer	Nottingham Forest (4). The FKS 1971/72 album notes: "Wallsall-born but locally-developed full-back who was signed from school and turned professional in May 1964. Made his first senior appearance against Leeds United in November 1967 but found further opportunities more restricted. Ht. 5ft. 10½in. Wt. 11.8.". Ray's son has kindly added "He was on loan at Nuneaton for a while then he played for Oldbury, Rushall, and finished up at Blakenhall in Walsall where he also managed till he hung up his boots in 1984 . Sadly he died of cancer on 2/10/97, but left a lot of happy memories".
Ivor Allchurch 10/07/1997 Aged 67	Swansea Town (445), Newcastle United (143), Cardiff City (103). Awarded M.B.E. in 1966. Played for Wales in the World Cup in 1958 in Sweden. The 1978/79 Sun Soccercard states: "Inside forward known as the 'Golden Boy' of Welsh Football. Wales most capped player with 68. Signed for Swansea Town in 1947 and won his Welsh cap in November, 1950 against England and then did not miss a match for Wales in the next six years - a run of 27 matches. Transferred to Newcastle in October, 1958. Returned to Wales when he signed for Cardiff in August, 1961 and finished playing with Swansea in 1965.".
Ron Wigg 03/07/1997 Aged 48	Ipswich Town (37), Watford (97), Rotherham United (65), Grimsby Town (63), Barnsley (18), Scunthorpe United (50). Later became a football mentor in the United States. The 1969/70 FKS album notes: "Had a handful of League outings during Ipswich's last promotion season 1967-68 and revealed a scoring touch as spearhead. Then made his First Division debut against Manchester City in March 1969 and scored. Ex-Orient. Ht. 6ft. Wt. 11.5.".
Brian Alderson 23/04/1997 Aged 46	Coventry City (127), Leicester City (90). The 1974/75 FKS album notes: "Scot from Dundee who developed with the local junior side Lochee Harp. Became a professional with Coventry City in 1968 and first appeared as a winger. Has since been converted more to a central striking position. A Scottish Under-23 cap. Ht. 5ft. 7in. Wt. 10.7.".

Bobby Keetch 29/06/1996 Aged 54	West Ham United (0), Fulham (106), Q.P.R. (52). The 1965 Barratt A13 series card notes: "A snappy dresser and art-lover off the field - that's the golden-haired Keetch. But in soccer action he is a tough centre-half and one of the most effective "stoppers" in the First Division. His senior debut for Fulham, against Sheffield United in a League Cup-tie, was not a great success and he had a long wait before eventually displacing Bill Dodgin and becoming an automatic choice.".

Harry Cripps 29/12/1995 Aged 54	West Ham United (0), Millwall (400), Charlton Athletic (20). Millwall captain and local hero. The IPC card, My Favourite Soccer Stars, presented free with the Scorcher and Score comic in 1971 states: "Popular captain and strong defender. Born in East London, he joined West Ham as a junior but made his mark when he moved to Millwall in 1961. He has now played more than 250 games for the Lions, helping them to rise from the Fourth to the Second Division.".

Albert Johanneson 28/09/1995 Aged 55	Germiston Callies, Leeds United (172), York City (26). The 1968/69 FKS album notes: "Coloured South African outside-left with tremendous speed. Was originally invited for a trial in January 1961 and was signed as a professional in April the same year. His club at home was Germiston where he was an inside forward.".

Bobby Stokes 30/05/1995 Aged 44	Southampton (217), Portsmouth (24). Perhaps best remembered for scoring the winning goal for Southampton against Manchester United in the 1976 F.A. Cup Final. The FKS 1970/71 album notes: "Former England youth international striker who was an apprentice before turning professional on his 17th birthday in February 1968. League debut against Burnley in April 1969 and scored twice. Comes from Portsmouth. Ht. 5ft. 10in. Wt. 12.2.".
Noel Brotherston 06/05/1995 Aged 38	Tottenham Hotspur (1), Blackburn Rovers (317), Bury (38), Scarborough (5). Won international caps for Northern Ireland. Died of a heart attack while still very young. The 1978/79 Sun Soccercard notes: "Striker who soon settled in at Blackburn after joining them from Tottenham Hotspur in June, 1977. Noel joined Tottenham from school and had made one first-term appearance before his transfer to Rovers. Showed what a good signing he was by being top scorer for Rovers in the 1977-78 season with 11 goals in 40 appearances.".

Former Blackburn Rovers and Everton inside-forward secured in March 1965.Has 32 Welsh caps and is an Under-23 international. Scored 100 league goals for Everton. Professional since 1955.".

Jim Holton 05/10/1993 Aged 42	West Bromwich Albion (0), Shrewsbury Town (67), Manchester United (63), Sunderland (15), Coventry City (91). 15 international caps for Scotland. Suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his car. The Bassett's 1974/75 card notes "The problem spot in the Scottish team in recent years has been centre-half, but in young Jim Holton they are well on the way to solving it. He isn't the most skilful of players, his build makes him look more awkward than most, but he is effective. His goal against against West Germany helped boost the team. He was bought from Shrewsbury and has improved with every game. One of the hardest men to beat. He was born in Lesmaghan. Scales 13½st. and is 6ft 2ins."
Bosco Jankovic ??/10/1993 Aged 42	Zeljeznicar, Middlesbrough (50), Metz. Died from cancer. The FKS Soccer 82 sticker notes "Striker. Yugoslavian with five international Caps. "Bosco" became the Club's first overseas player when he signed from Keljezniicar F.C. in February 1979. Returned to Yugoslavia June 1981 to play for Viljeznicar in an important Cup fixture".
Tony Barton 20/08/1993 Aged 56	Fulham (49), Nottingham Forest (22), Portsmouth (130). Subsequent career in management was highlighted by 1982 European Cup Final win with Aston Villa. Died of a heart attack.	Not known to have appeared in football cards of the period of this website.

Bobby Moore, O.B.E. 24/02/1993 Aged 51	West Ham United (544), Fulham (124). Won F.A. Cup, European Cup Winners Cup and World Cup honours. Recognised as one of the best defenders of all time.  He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1967. Died from cancer. The FKS 1973/74 album notes "Completed 103 international caps for the England team in the 1973 Home Championship. West Ham and country's skipper. Has over 500 League appearances having turned to the paid ranks in June 1958. Ht. 6ft. Wt. 12.13.".

Had a successful career in management after the end of his playing career with Spurs. The 1974/75 FKS card notes "Began his career as a winger at Middlesbrough but was converted successfully to left-back. Had spells on the books of both Manchester United and Wolves. Moved to Spurs in May 1964 for a £45,000 fee and has won Under-23 and four England caps. Ht. 6ft. Wt. 11.13½".

Was Managing Director at Bournemouth when killed, along with four others, in a car accident in Italy while there for the World Cup. Harry Redknapp was in the car at the time and, obviously, survived! The 1969/70 IPC card notes "Six-footer and a powerful midfield defender, he joined Villa in December 1968 from Rotherham Unied for a fee of £25,000. Born at Rotherham, he spent 8 years with the local club and played in well over 200 first team games, many as captain.".
