This was Peru's first World Cup Finals appearance since the first ever tournament in Uruguay in 1930. In 1970 they played against West Germany, Bulgaria and Morocco. They qualified for the Quarter Final round with wins over Bulgaria 3-2, and Morocco 3-0, then lost to West Germany 3-1.
In the Quarter Finals they were unlucky enough to have to play Brazil, resulting in their exit from the tournament, defeated 4-2.
Teofilo Cubillas ended up with an impressive total of five goals from four games. Scorers: Cubillas (5), Gallardo (2), Chumpitaz, Challe.
