A&BC Chewing Gum Ltd. - 1971/72 Footballer (Purple backs) wrappers

The A&BC Chewing Gum Footballer set issued in late 1971, commonly known as Purple backs, marked what some see now as the beginning of the decline of A&BC footballers. Perhaps they were just trying some new things. The price has dropped from 2½p to 2p, though the wrapper no longer tells you how many cards you were going to receive. The Bazooka Joe cross-promotion offers have gone, replaced by advertisements for the album or for the gum itself. Series 1 included 109 cards. Series 2 included 110 and the club crests. Series 3 included only 71 cards and the superstars (small stamps). Series 1 wrappers included an advertisement for Bazooka Joe gum, while Series 2 and 3 included details of how to obtain albums for the crests and superstar stamps.
